Coachella 2012 Photos

May 20th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Coachella 2012 was the beginning of something that nobody is really ready to understand. I’ve spent the last 6 months trying to grasp it myself, and see where I fit inside what is becoming one of the largest, most influential music events in the world that happens to be in my home town.

Thanks to the Coachella Valley Art Scene and Goldenvoice I was able to attend both weekends, documenting life inside the Coachella Art Studios and Alf Alpha’s performances in the Gobi Tent. A video is in the works and here are some of my favorite photos from the experience.

Shooting fashion is something that has been on mind for over a year now. Thanks to my photographer friend brian pescador I was able to finally shoot my first Fashion video. We shot this over a month ago, and since I have shot two other Fashion projects, so I guess I just needed the first one (look for those other 2 to be finished within the month)

We shot this video in 16mm film, but I wanted to shoot digital just so i could put it in my reel. We plan on producing a conceptual Fashion film around these photoshoots with BP using the 16mm, but for now i’m just going to cut little vignettes as I experiment with this new art form & style.

Cherokee Fade & Hello Evening

February 27th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

In December we took a quick trip up to SF to play a show with Hello Evening and Cherokee Fade. It was a great trip with tons of laughs and good times, I shot a lot and in my recent “better-late-than-never” attitude here is a bit of that, only 3 1/2 months post-trip. A bunch of photos of the bands and then a raw video of Hello Evening practicing “Call Me Carolina” then performing it that evening.

There is a short doc on Cherokee Fade currently in the works, i’m like 95% done with the first draft. Be on the look out.

Both bands have great new records, both for free, so make sure to check them out.

The #7 Time-Lapse Test

February 12th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Shot from the #7 Apartment in Palm Springs, here’s another time-lapse test. I did multiple tests, using different exposures/focal lengths. I am still trying to nail down proper exposure for entire sunrise/sunset, these started about 2 1/2 stops underexposed. All were shot on a Canon 7D except the ultra-wide in the middle, that was shot with the Go Pro. Music track is “Lush” by Alf Alpha Enjoy.

The DOME Time-lapse Tests

February 8th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Here’s some early morning brand new content for you. I’ve begun experimenting with Time lapse photography and here are some early results. These are very RAW and rough around the edges as i’m just trying to get the form and fundamentals down. They were shot at the DOME house in Joshua Tree, it was extremely windy as you’ll tell from the shaky-ness of the 7D time-lapses. These were all shot with a Gro Pro hero in video mode and stills mode, and a Canon 7D w/intervalometer. I dropped in “Kite Season” by Dreamcatcher to fit the mood.

DOME Test I – Timelapse from Steven Preston on Vimeo.

Hopefully there will be more tests to come, i’m actually shooting another right now from balcony downtown PS.

…and on another note, the DOME experience was pretty geodesic altogether…

Hello Evening Self Titled Album

January 16th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

My friends Kevin and Nisan of the band Hello Evening have made another record and I was privileged enough to be apart of it.  I have a deep respect for the recording process and am honored any time a band lets me share in the process.  I am inspired by the creative process, and it is something I love to document. The amount of effort that goes into making a record I think is under appreciated by most listeners.

I was able to take some photos and put together some video teasers for the release. I also worked with the band on the media for the record, so I encoruage you to go download the album, it’s free.

More reflections on the album and photos after the jump.

Actively Retroactive: Moon Block Party

January 7th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

A catalyst for the new site and blog is I’ve shot a lot of stuff in the last year that has kinda just been sitting around, and i’d to share with it people. So the first couple of the blog posts will be blowing out old media, that may or may not already be up on the internet somewhere.

First is Moon Block Party. A great series of shows happening in Southern California right now, these shows are really showcasing the current psychedelic and vintage rock style that exists in this area. These images are from the All American Moon Block Party at Dillon’s Road House. A short video accompanies the photos, of Jeffertiti’s Nile. more after the jump.
